saṃkete piṅgalā veśyā kāntenāsīdvinākṛtā | atha kṛcchragatā śāntāṃ buddhimāsthāpayattadā ||
Pingala, a courtesan, was left without her lover at the place of meeting. Then, in her distress, she established her mind in a calm understanding.
पिंगला नाम की एक वेश्या संकेत-स्थान पर अपने प्रिय के बिना रह गई। तब उस संकट में उसने अपनी बुद्धि को शांत अवस्था में स्थिर किया।
Pingala's work is part of the story's setting; it is never a reason to judge or demean anyone. Her story is honoured in the tradition as one of awakening.
