12.168.52 Pingala

sukhaṃ nirāśaḥ svapiti nairāśyaṃ paramaṃ sukham | āśāmanāśāṃ kṛtvā hi sukhaṃ svapiti piṅgalā ||

One who is free of hope sleeps happily; freedom from hope is the highest happiness. Having turned hope into no-hope, Pingala sleeps in peace.

Nairāśya here means freedom from the craving of expectation, not hopelessness or despair. If you feel hopeless about life, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

'Hope' here means the anxious clinging to what others will give us. When we stop waiting on that, the restless mind finally rests and we can sleep in peace.

Mahabharata 12.168.52: Pingala's famous conclusion: one without hope (of craving) sleeps happily; freedom from expectation is the highest happiness; having turned hope into non-hope, Pingala sleeps in peace.
