12.168.6 Yudhishthira to Bhishma

naṣṭe dhane vā dāre vā putre pitari vā mṛte | yayā buddhyā nudecchokaṃ tanme brūhi pitāmaha ||

Yudhishthira said: When wealth is lost, or a wife, a son or a father has died, tell me, grandfather, the understanding by which one can drive away grief.

For someone freshly bereaved, acknowledge the loss first; the verse does not forbid mourning or love. If grief feels unbearable or you think of harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Yudhishthira, who has just lost so many in the war, asks the question every grieving person asks: how do I carry this? Asking for help with grief is itself wise.

Mahabharata 12.168.6: Yudhishthira asks Bhishma by what understanding one can drive away grief when wealth is lost or a wife, son or father has died.
