12.168.7 Bhishma to Yudhishthira

naṣṭe dhane vā dāre vā putre pitari vā mṛte | aho duḥkhamiti dhyāyañśokasyāpacitiṃ caret ||

Bhishma said: When wealth is lost, or a wife, a son or a father has died, one should reflect, 'Ah, such is sorrow,' and so work to lessen the grief.

For someone freshly bereaved, acknowledge the loss first; the verse does not forbid mourning or love. If grief feels unbearable or you think of harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Grief is not ignored here. Bhishma asks us to look at it directly, to see loss as part of every life, and then to take steps that slowly ease it.

Mahabharata 12.168.7: Bhishma answers that when such loss comes, one should reflect on the nature of sorrow itself and so work to lessen grief.
