sāgarānūpamāśritya tapastaptaṃ tvayā mahat | na ca dharmasya saṃjñāṃ tvaṃ purā vettha kathaṃ cana ||
Living by the shore of the sea, you practised great austerity; yet before now you never in any way understood what dharma is.
The austerities described here (fasting, living on air, exposure to rain and cold) are part of the story, and the story itself says they did not bring him dharma. They are not health or dietary advice.

Years of practice, rules and sacrifice do not by themselves teach us what is right. It is worth asking, honestly, whether our efforts have made us kinder and wiser, or only harder.
Mahabharata 12.253.48. Tuladhara speaks to Jajali, in the story Bhishma tells Yudhishthira: great austerity has not taught Jajali what dharma is.
