12.254.26 Tuladhara to Jajali

yasmādudvijate vidvansarvaloko vṛkādiva | krośatastīramāsādya yathā sarve jalecarāḥ ||

One from whom the whole world shrinks, O learned one, as from a wolf, as all water creatures [dive away] when someone comes shouting to the bank,

Meaning today and context

The images are vivid: a wolf, a shouting figure at the riverbank. A person who makes others scatter in fear has lost something essential, whatever else they have.

Tulādhāra, the merchant of Vārāṇasī, speaking to the proud ascetic Jājali (Bhīṣma narrates to Yudhiṣṭhira) (12.254.26). The contrast: the person everyone fears.
