12.254.41 Tuladhara to Jajali

tāni jīvāni vikrīya kā mṛteṣu vicāraṇā | kā taile kā ghṛte brahmanmadhunyapsvauṣadheṣu vā ||

When living creatures themselves are sold, what scruple is there about the dead? And what [wrong] is there, O brahmin, in oil, in ghee, in honey, in water or in herbs?

Tulādhāra is asking an ascetic to notice the hidden suffering of animals; this is not a condemnation of farmers, herders or anyone's livelihood, and never a reason to harass or attack anyone.

Meaning today and context

Jājali looked down on a shopkeeper's trade, yet trading in suffering passes unquestioned. Judge a livelihood by the harm it does, not by its status.
