12.254.6 Tuladhara to Jajali

adroheṇaiva bhūtānāmalpadroheṇa vā punaḥ | yā vṛttiḥ sa paro dharmastena jīvāmi jājale ||

A way of living that rests on not harming beings at all, or harming them as little as possible: that is the highest dharma. By that I live, Jājali.

Every livelihood touches others. The question Tulādhāra puts to us is practical: can I earn my living in a way that harms as few people and creatures as possible? That honest effort is itself dharma.

Tulādhāra, the merchant of Vārāṇasī, speaking to the proud ascetic Jājali (Bhīṣma narrates to Yudhiṣṭhira) (12.254.6). The heart of his teaching: a livelihood that harms no one.
