12.275.11 Samanga to Narada

yasmai prajñāṃ kathayante manuṣyāḥ prajñāmūlo hīndriyāṇāṃ prasādaḥ | muhyanti śocanti yadendriyāṇi prajñālābho nāsti mūḍhendriyasya ||

Wisdom is what people speak of for this reason: the clearness of the senses has wisdom as its root. When the senses are confused, people are deluded and grieve; one whose senses are confused gains no wisdom.

Meaning today and context

When we are pulled about by what we see, hear and want, we think poorly and suffer more. Clear seeing and a settled mind feed each other.

Mahabharata 12.275.11. Samanga: the calm of the senses is rooted in wisdom; confused senses bring grief.
