12.276.39 Narada to Galava

apaśyanto'nnaviṣayaṃ bhuñjate vighasāśinaḥ | bhuñjānaṃ cānnaviṣayānviṣayaṃ viddhi karmaṇām ||

Those who live on what is left over eat without looking to the pleasures of food. And know that one who enjoys the objects of food has become subject to actions.

This is about craving, not a diet. It is not advice to eat leftovers or restrict food; for eating problems, see a doctor; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Eating to live, without chasing taste, keeps one free; chasing pleasure in food ties us into more wanting and more doing.

Mahabharata 12.276.39: Nārada contrasts those who eat simply from what remains with those who chase the pleasures of food; the sense is compressed and the reading is uncertain.
