vāco vegaṃ manasaḥ krodhavegaṃ vivitsāvegamudaropasthavegam | etānvegānyo viṣahatyudīrṇāṃstaṃ manye'haṃ brāhmaṇaṃ vai muniṃ ca ||
The rush of speech, the surge of anger in the mind, the urge to acquire, the urges of the belly and of sex: whoever withstands these urges when they rise, him I consider a true brahmin and a sage.
'Brahmin' and 'twice-born' here are defined by conduct and inner discipline, never by birth; the verse must not be used to rank or exclude anyone. Mastering the urges of belly and sex means self-control, not a demand for celibacy or fasting.
Meaning today and context
Most regrets come from an urge acted on in the moment: a word blurted out, a flash of temper, a craving. Learning to pause when the urge rises is the practical heart of self-control.
Mahabharata 12.288.14. The Swan names the urges to master: speech, anger, craving for gain, belly and sex.
