12.288.18 Hamsa to The Sadhyas

pāpīyasaḥ kṣametaiva śreyasaḥ sadṛśasya ca | vimānito hato''kruṣṭa evaṃ siddhiṃ gamiṣyati ||

One should forgive the worse, the better and the equal alike. Slighted, struck, abused, if one bears it in this way, one will reach perfection.

Bearing harsh words calmly is about not being ruled by anger; it never means staying in abuse or accepting violence. If you are being abused or are in danger, call 112 or the women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

It is easy to forgive people below us and hard to forgive equals or superiors, or the reverse. The verse asks for the same forgiveness for everyone, which keeps resentment from taking root.

Mahabharata 12.288.18. The Swan: forgive the lesser, the greater and the equal alike; bearing disrespect, blows and abuse leads to perfection.
