12.288.20 Hamsa to The Sadhyas

nāhaṃ śaptaḥ pratiśapāmi kiṃ ciddamaṃ dvāraṃ hyamṛtasyeha vedmi | guhyaṃ brahma tadidaṃ vo bravīmi na mānuṣācchreṣṭhataraṃ hi kiṃ cit ||

When cursed, I do not curse back at all; I know that self-control is the door to immortality here. This secret truth I tell you: there is nothing higher than the human state.

Meaning today and context

Being human is a rare and high chance: we can choose not to return harm for harm. The Swan places that dignity above even the gods he is speaking to.

Mahabharata 12.288.20. The Swan: he does not curse back when cursed; self-control is the door to immortality; and the famous secret: nothing is higher than being human.
