12.288.25 Hamsa to The Sadhyas

ākrośanāvamānābhyāmabudhādvardhate budhaḥ | tasmānna vardhayedanyaṃ na cātmānaṃ vihiṃsayet ||

Through abuse and contempt from the unwise, the wise one grows. Therefore one should not make another grow in this way, nor do harm to oneself.

Bearing harsh words calmly is about not being ruled by anger; it never means staying in abuse or accepting violence. If you are being abused or are in danger, call 112 or the women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Insulting someone harms you more than them: they grow by bearing it, you shrink by doing it. Even practically, contempt costs the one who shows it.

Mahabharata 12.288.25. The Swan: the wise grow through the abuse of the foolish, so one should neither abuse others (feeding their merit) nor harm oneself.
