12.288.26 Hamsa to The Sadhyas

amṛtasyeva saṃtṛpyedavamānasya vai dvijaḥ | sukhaṃ hyavamataḥ śete yo'vamantā sa naśyati ||

A twice-born should be content with disrespect as if it were nectar; for the one who is disrespected sleeps happily, while the one who shows contempt is ruined.

'Brahmin' and 'twice-born' here are defined by conduct and inner discipline, never by birth; the verse must not be used to rank or exclude anyone. Bearing harsh words calmly is about not being ruled by anger; it never means staying in abuse or accepting violence. If you are being abused or are in danger, call 112 or the women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Being looked down on stings, but it cannot take your peace unless you let it. Contempt corrodes the one who carries it, not the one it is aimed at.

Mahabharata 12.288.26. The Swan: a seeker should welcome disrespect like nectar; the one disrespected sleeps in peace, the one who shows contempt destroys himself.
