12.288.28 Hamsa to The Sadhyas

catvāri yasya dvārāṇi suguptānyamarottamāḥ | upasthamudaraṃ hastau vākcaturthī sa dharmavit ||

Best of immortals, he whose four doors are well guarded, the sexual organ, the belly, the hands, and speech as the fourth, he knows dharma.

Guarding sex and belly means self-control, not a demand for celibacy or fasting; this is not dietary advice.

A practical checklist: what you desire, what you eat, what you do with your hands, and what you say. Keeping these four in check covers most of ethical life.

Mahabharata 12.288.28. The Swan addresses the Sadhyas: one who guards the four doors (sex, belly, hands and speech) knows dharma.
