sadā devāḥ sādhubhiḥ saṃvadante na mānuṣaṃ viṣayaṃ yānti draṣṭum | nenduḥ samaḥ syādasamo hi vāyuruccāvacaṃ viṣayaṃ yaḥ sa veda ||
The gods always converse with the good; they do not go to look upon the objects of human desire. The moon is not his equal, nor is the wind, unequal as it is: he who knows the world of objects, high and low, [for what it is].
Meaning today and context
What draws the best in life to us is goodness, not the things we chase. Seeing pleasures, high or low, for what they are gives a steadiness that changes less than the moon or the wind.
Mahabharata 12.288.34. The Swan: the gods keep company with the good and do not go after the objects of human craving; a difficult verse, perhaps praising one who sees through high and low objects alike.
