12.317.9 Narada to Shuka

mṛtaṃ vā yadi vā naṣṭaṃ yo'tītamanuśocati | duḥkhena labhate duḥkhaṃ dvāvanarthau prapadyate ||

Whether something has died or been lost, one who keeps grieving for the past gets sorrow upon sorrow: he takes on two misfortunes.

Grief: acknowledge the loss first; mourning is not wrong. If grief does not ease, seek support: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The loss is the first pain; endless brooding over it is a second one we add ourselves. We can't undo the first, but we can slowly ease the second.

Mahabharata 12.317.9. Narada to Shuka: grieving over what is dead or lost only adds a second sorrow to the first.
