12.169.12 The son to The father

anavāpteṣu kāmeṣu mṛtyurabhyeti mānavam | śaṣpāṇīva vicinvantamanyatragatamānasam | vṛkīvoraṇamāsādya mṛtyurādāya gacchati ||

While his desires are still unfulfilled, death comes upon a man. As he gathers grass, his mind turned elsewhere, death seizes him and goes, as a she-wolf seizes a ram.

Meaning today and context

We rarely finish our list of wants before life ends. Living only to fulfil desires, absorbed and distracted, means missing what matters.

Mahabharata 12.169.12: The son says death comes to a person while their desires are still unfulfilled, like a she-wolf carrying off a ram that is grazing with its mind elsewhere.
