Mokshadharma 12.171.12

maṇī voṣṭrasya lambete priyau vatsatarau mama | śuddhaṃ hi daivamevedamato naivāsti pauruṣam ||

My two dear young bullocks hang from the camel like a pair of pendants. This is fate, pure and simple; so there is no such thing as human effort.

Mankin speaks in the bitterness of a fresh loss. This is his cry, not a teaching that effort is useless; the epic elsewhere honours effort. If a financial loss has left you hopeless, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

In shock, it is natural to feel that nothing we do matters. The story records this feeling honestly, and then lets Mankin move past it to a deeper answer.

In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, watching his bullocks dangle from the camel, concludes in his despair that only fate acts.
