tyajāmi kāma tvāṃ caiva yacca kiṃ citpriyaṃ tava | tavāhaṃ sukhamanvicchannātmanyupalabhe sukham ||
I give you up, Desire, and everything that is dear to you. I went looking for happiness through you, and I find happiness in myself.
Giving up desire here means inner freedom from craving, not leaving work, family, or the care of those who depend on you.
Meaning today and context
The happiness we chase outside often turns out to be available within, in a settled and contented mind. This is a turn of attention, not a rejection of the world.
In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth, renouncing Desire: seeking happiness through it, he finds happiness within himself.
