ātmanā saptamaṃ kāmaṃ hatvā śatrumivottamam | prāpyāvadhyaṃ brahmapuraṃ rājeva syāmahaṃ sukhī ||
Having slain with my own self desire, the seventh, like a foremost enemy, and reached the unassailable city of Brahman, I shall be happy as a king.
"Slaying" desire is an image for inner mastery; it is not about harming anyone or oneself.
Meaning today and context
Mastering desire is pictured as winning a kingdom that cannot be taken. The real sovereignty is over one's own wants.
In the story Bhishma tells (12.171), Mankin speaks to himself and to Desire after losing his last wealth: having slain desire, the seventh enemy, he will dwell happy as a king in the city of Brahman.
