Mokshadharma 12.172.20

12.172.20 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

āsravatyapi māmannaṃ punarbahuguṇaṃ bahu | punaralpaguṇaṃ stokaṃ punarnaivopapadyate ||

Food flows to me, at times rich and plentiful; at times poor and scanty; and at times it does not come at all.

Eating irregularly or going without food for days is the ascetic's description, not dietary or health advice. Living on what comes by chance describes a renunciate's inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to give up work, earning, food, or care for those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Life brings plenty, scarcity and nothing in turns. Peace that depends on always having plenty is fragile.

Mahabharata 12.172.20: The sage says food comes to him unpredictably: sometimes rich and plentiful, sometimes poor and scanty, sometimes not at all.
