12.172.21 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

kaṇānkadā citkhādāmi piṇyākamapi ca grase | bhakṣaye śālimāṃsāni bhakṣāṃścoccāvacānpunaḥ ||

Sometimes I eat broken grains, and I swallow even oil-cake; I eat fine rice and meats, and again foods of every kind, high and low.

Eating irregularly or going without food for days is the ascetic's description, not dietary or health advice. Living on what comes by chance describes a renunciate's inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to give up work, earning, food, or care for those who depend on you.

He neither prizes the fine nor rejects the plain. Not being fussy or proud about circumstances is a quiet kind of freedom.

Mahabharata 12.172.21: The sage lists what he eats: sometimes broken grain or oil-cake, sometimes fine rice and meat, every kind of food high and low.
