12.172.25 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

acalamanidhanaṃ śivaṃ viśokaṃ śucimatulaṃ viduṣāṃ mate niviṣṭam | anabhimatamasevitaṃ ca mūḍhairvratamidamājagaraṃ śuciścarāmi ||

Unmoving, free of death, auspicious, free of sorrow, pure, beyond compare, held in the judgement of the wise, unwanted and unpractised by the deluded: this python vow I practise, pure.

Living on what comes by chance describes a renunciate's inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to give up work, earning, food, or care for those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

The sage values a life of not grasping as steady and free of sorrow, though the world does not prize it. Contentment rarely looks impressive from outside.

Mahabharata 12.172.25: The sage praises the python vow (the first of a series of verses ending 'this python vow I practise, pure'): steady, sorrowless, valued by the wise and ignored by the deluded.
