12.172.26 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

acalitamatiracyutaḥ svadharmātparimitasaṃsaraṇaḥ parāvarajñaḥ | vigatabhayakaṣāyalobhamoho vratamidamājagaraṃ śuciścarāmi ||

With mind unshaken, not slipping from my own dharma, keeping my wanderings within bounds, knowing the higher and the lower, with fear, passion, greed and delusion gone: this python vow I practise, pure.

Meaning today and context

Not grasping does not mean not caring: the sage stays true to his own duty. Freedom from fear and greed comes with a steady commitment, not instead of it.

Mahabharata 12.172.26: The sage describes himself in the vow: steady, not falling from his own dharma, free of fear, passion, greed and delusion.
