12.172.27 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

aniyataphalabhakṣyabhojyapeyaṃ vidhipariṇāmavibhaktadeśakālam | hṛdayasukhamasevitaṃ kadaryairvratamidamājagaraṃ śuciścarāmi ||

Where food, meals and drink come with no fixed rule, where place and time are dealt out by the unfolding of fate, a joy to the heart, never practised by the miserly: this python vow I practise, pure.

Eating irregularly or going without food for days is the ascetic's description, not dietary or health advice. Living on what comes by chance describes a renunciate's inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to give up work, earning, food, or care for those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

The miser clutches and plans every scrap; the sage finds joy in not clutching. The lesson for us is about loosening the grip of hoarding, not about giving up planning.

Mahabharata 12.172.27: The sage describes the vow: no fixed food or drink, place and time set by how fate unfolds, a joy to the heart that misers never know.
