12.172.28 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

idamidamiti tṛṣṇayābhibhūtaṃ janamanavāptadhanaṃ viṣīdamānam | nipuṇamanuniśāmya tattvabuddhyā vratamidamājagaraṃ śuciścarāmi ||

Having looked closely, with insight into what is real, at people overcome by craving, crying 'this, and this!', and sinking into dejection when the wealth they want does not come: this python vow I practise, pure.

Meaning today and context

'This, and this too': craving always finds the next thing, and its failure leaves us low. Seeing that pattern in others, and in ourselves, is the start of freedom.

Mahabharata 12.172.28: The sage says he took up the vow after closely watching people overpowered by craving, wanting 'this, and this', and sinking into gloom when the wealth does not come.
