12.172.30 The python-vowed sage to Prahlada

sukhamasukhamanarthamarthalābhaṃ ratimaratiṃ maraṇaṃ ca jīvitaṃ ca | vidhiniyatamavekṣya tattvato'haṃ vratamidamājagaraṃ śuciścarāmi ||

Seeing truly that pleasure and pain, loss and gain, delight and discontent, death and life are all fixed by fate: this python vow I practise, pure.

Seeing life's ups and downs as beyond one's control is meant to free the mind from anxiety, not to stop anyone from acting, seeking help or treatment, or changing what can be changed.

Meaning today and context

Much of life's pairs, gain and loss, joy and sorrow, are not in our hands. Seeing that can ease the anxiety of trying to control everything.

Mahabharata 12.172.30: The sage says he sees pleasure and pain, gain and loss, delight and discontent, life and death as set by fate, and so keeps the vow.
