Seeing that what is sought through striving ends in unhappiness, with understanding gained and settled in myself, in order to restrain the thirsty, unsteady mind: this python vow I practise, pure.
Meaning today and context
The real target of the vow is the thirsty, restless mind. Simplicity is a way of calming that thirst, not a goal in itself.
Mahabharata 12.172.33: The sage says he saw that what is pursued by striving leads only to unhappiness, and so, settled in himself, he keeps the vow to rein in the thirsty, restless mind.
