12.173.10 The jackal (Indra) to Kashyapa

sarve lābhāḥ sābhimānā iti satyā bata śrutiḥ | saṃtoṣaṇīyarūpo'si lobhādyadabhimanyase ||

'Every gain brings conceit': how true, alas, is that saying! You are one who has every reason to be content, yet out of greed you think yourself deprived.

Meaning today and context

What we gain quickly becomes 'ours', and then any loss or insult feels unbearable. Often the pain is not in what we lack but in a sense of entitlement.

Mahabharata 12.173.10: Indra, disguised as a jackal, speaks to the despairing sage Kashyapa: every gain brings pride, and greed makes him feel wronged when he should be content.
