12.173.18 The jackal (Indra) to Kashyapa

etāvatāpi lābhena toṣṭumarhasi kāśyapa | kiṃ punaryo'si sattvānāṃ sarveṣāṃ brāhmaṇottamaḥ ||

Even with this much gain you ought to be content, Kashyapa; how much more so, when you are the foremost among all creatures, a brahmin!

Ranking births (the brahmin as best, animals or some communities as 'sinful births') reflects the views of its time. Worth is by conduct, never by birth; this must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Contentment does not need everything to go right. If even the basics of a human life are a real gain, we already have reason to be content and to go on.

Mahabharata 12.173.18: Indra, disguised as a jackal, speaks to the despairing sage Kashyapa: even this much should content him, and he has far more.
