12.173.25 The jackal (Indra) to Kashyapa

na tṛptiḥ priyalābhe'sti tṛṣṇā nādbhiḥ praśāmyati | saṃprajvalati sā bhūyaḥ samidbhiriva pāvakaḥ ||

There is no satisfaction in gaining what one likes. Thirst is not quenched by water: it blazes up again, like fire fed with firewood.

Meaning today and context

Feeding a craving does not end it; it makes it stronger. Whether it is shopping, scrolling or status, the way out is not more of the same but seeing the craving for what it is.

Mahabharata 12.173.25: Indra, disguised as a jackal, speaks to the despairing sage Kashyapa: craving is never quenched by getting what one wants; it blazes up like fire fed with fuel.
