12.173.27 The jackal (Indra) to Kashyapa

paricchidyaiva kāmānāṃ sarveṣāṃ caiva karmaṇām | mūlaṃ rundhīndriyagrāmaṃ śakuntāniva pañjare ||

Cutting off at the root all desires and all actions, restrain the host of the senses, as one keeps birds in a cage.

Restraining the senses here means not feeding cravings. It is not advice to stop eating or deny the body care; not dietary or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Cravings grow from the senses chasing things. Guarding what we let our eyes, ears and appetites run after is the practical root of self-control.

Mahabharata 12.173.27: Indra, disguised as a jackal, speaks to the despairing sage Kashyapa: cut off the root of desires and actions by restraining the senses, like birds in a cage.
