kāmakrodhau vaśe kṛtvā brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ | vikramya ghore tapasi brāhmaṇaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ | kālākāṅkṣī carellokānnirapāya ivātmavān ||
Bringing desire and anger under control, celibate, master of his senses, striving in fierce austerity, the brahmin of firm vows, self-possessed, should move through the worlds awaiting his time, as if beyond harm.
Celibacy and fierce austerity describe the renunciate ideal of its time; they are not a demand for celibacy or self-punishment for anyone. 'Brahmin' here means by conduct and learning, never by birth.
