damameva praśaṃsanti vṛddhāḥ śrutisamādhayaḥ | sarveṣāmeva varṇānāṃ brāhmaṇasya viśeṣataḥ ||
The elders, whose minds rest on scripture, praise self-control above all, for people of every varṇa, and especially for the brahmin.
Words like varṇa, brāhmaṇa and 'twice-born' here name a role of learning and conduct; read them by conduct, never by birth, and never to rank or exclude anyone.
