Sanatsujatiya 1.12

1.12 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

abhidhyā vai prathamaṃ hanti cainaṃ kāmakrodhau gṛhya cainaṃ tu paścāt | ete bālānmṛtyave prāpayanti dhīrāstu dhairyeṇa taranti mṛtyum ||

First, covetous brooding strikes a person down; then desire and anger seize him. These lead the immature to death, but the steadfast cross beyond death through their steadiness.

Meaning today and context

Trouble begins with what we keep dwelling on. Brooding turns into wanting, and frustrated wanting turns into anger. Steadiness means catching the chain at its first link.

Sanatsujata traces the sequence of ruin: first covetous brooding strikes, then desire and anger seize the person; the immature are led to death, but the steadfast cross it by steadiness.
