Sanatsujatiya 1.13

1.13 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

amanyamānaḥ kṣatriya kiṃ cidanyannādhīyate tārṇa ivāsya vyāghraḥ | krodhāllobhānmohamayāntarātmā sa vai mṛtyustvaccharīre ya eṣaḥ ||

One who sets no store by anything else and does not dwell on it, O kshatriya: to him [death] is like a tiger made of straw. [But] the inner self that, through anger and greed, is made of delusion: that is the death which lives here in your own body.

Meaning today and context

The real danger is not outside us; it is the anger and greed we carry inside. When we stop giving those things weight, what frightened us loses its teeth, like a straw tiger.

Sanatsujata tells the king that for one who gives no weight to sense-objects, death is like a tiger made of straw; but the inner self deluded by anger and greed is the death that lives in one's own body.
