Sanatsujatiya 1.18

1.18 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

Those who do not compete in strength, as the strong compete in strength: those brahmins, after passing from here, shine in the world of heaven.

'Brahmin' here means a person of learning, truthfulness and self-restraint, as these chapters themselves define it; it is about conduct, never birth, and must not be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Much of life is spent in contests of strength and status. Those who step out of that race, without needing to prove themselves, have a quiet radiance of their own.

Sanatsujata begins describing the true brahmin: those who do not compete for power the way the strong do shine in heaven after death.
