Sanatsujatiya 1.2

1.2 Dhritarashtra to Sanatsujata

sanatsujāta yadīdaṃ śṛṇomi mṛtyurhi nāstīti tavopadeśam | devāsurā hyācaranbrahmacaryamamṛtyave tatkatarannu satyam ||

Sanatsujata, I hear that your teaching is that there is no death. Yet gods and demons practised brahmacarya to become free of death. Which of these, then, is true?

Meaning today and context

Behind many of our worries is the fear of death. Dhritarashtra asks plainly what most of us wonder: is death real, and if not, why does everyone struggle so hard against it?

Dhritarashtra opens with his real worry: he has heard Sanatsujata teach that there is no death, yet even gods and demons practised brahmacarya to escape death. Which is true?
