1.20 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

yatrākathayamānasya prayacchatyaśivaṃ bhayam | atiriktamivākurvansa śreyānnetaro janaḥ ||

Where someone brings harm and fear to a person who does not proclaim himself, the one who does nothing excessive in return is the better man, not the other.

Not retaliating does not mean staying in danger or abuse. If you are being threatened or harmed, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

When someone tries to intimidate us, we feel pressure to hit back harder. Keeping our dignity and not going to excess is the stronger position, even if it doesn't look like it.

Sanatsujata speaks of a quiet person who does not proclaim himself and yet is threatened by another: the one who does not retaliate or overstep is the better person.
