Sanatsujatiya 1.23

1.23 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

nityamajñātacaryā me iti manyeta brāhmaṇaḥ | jñātīnāṃ tu vasanmadhye naiva vidyeta kiṃ cana ||

A brahmin should think, 'My way of life should always remain unknown.' Though living among his kinsmen, he should not be known for anything at all.

'Brahmin' here means a person of learning, truthfulness and self-restraint, as these chapters themselves define it; it is about conduct, never birth, and must not be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Real inner work does not need an audience. Practising quietly, without making it a badge, protects it from pride.

Sanatsujata advises that the seeker should keep his practice hidden: living among kin, he should not be known for anything special.
