Sanatsujatiya 1.5

1.5 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

pramādādvai asurāḥ parābhavannapramādādbrahmabhūtā bhavanti | na vai mṛtyurvyāghra ivātti jantūnna hyasya rūpamupalabhyate ha ||

Through heedlessness the demons were defeated; through heedfulness people become Brahman. Death does not devour creatures like a tiger; indeed, no form of it is ever seen.

This verse is about inner heedlessness as 'death', not about dying. If you are grieving or thinking about ending your life, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

The thing we fear as a monster outside is often working quietly inside us, as carelessness and inattention. Downfall rarely comes in one leap; it comes from small lapses we stop noticing.

Sanatsujata illustrates: the demons fell through heedlessness, and through heedfulness people become one with Brahman. Death is not a tiger that eats creatures; it has no visible form.
