Sanatsujatiya 1.8

1.8 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

tatastaṃ devā anu viplavante ato mṛtyurmaraṇākhyāmupaiti | karmodaye karmaphalānurāgāstatrānu yānti na taranti mṛtyum ||

Then the gods [the senses] follow him as he goes; hence death gets the name of dying. When their actions bear fruit, those attached to the fruits of action follow after them there, and do not cross beyond death.

Meaning today and context

When we are hooked on outcomes, every result pulls us along behind it. Clinging to rewards keeps us bound to the cycle of chasing; freedom starts with loosening that grip.

Sanatsujata continues: when a person departs, the senses follow, and this is what is called dying; those attached to the fruits of their actions follow those fruits when they ripen and do not cross beyond death.
