Sanatsujatiya 2.23

2.23 Dhritarashtra to Sanatsujata

ākhyānapañcamairvedairbhūyiṣṭhaṃ kathyate janaḥ | tathaivānye caturvedāstrivedāśca tathāpare ||

Most people are spoken of as knowing the Vedas with the epic tales as the fifth; others likewise as knowing four Vedas, and others three.

We often judge people by their titles and degrees. Dhritarashtra wonders whether those labels tell us who is truly wise.

Dhritarashtra asks about scholars' titles: some are called masters of the Vedas with the epics as a fifth, others of four or three Vedas.
