Sanatsujatiya 2.25

2.25 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

ekasya vedasyājñānādvedāste bahavo'bhavan | satyasyaikasya rājendra satye kaścidavasthitaḥ | evaṃ vedamanutsādya prajñāṃ mahati kurvate ||

Through not knowing the one Veda, the Vedas became many. Of the one Truth, O king of kings, only a rare one is established in the Truth. Thus, without casting the Veda aside, they set their understanding on the Great.

Meaning today and context

Many paths, books and schools are attempts to say one truth. We don't need to throw away tradition; we need to look through it to what it points at.

Sanatsujata answers: the Vedas became many through ignorance of the one Veda, the one Truth; rare is the one established in that Truth, and such people, without discarding the Veda, set their understanding on the Great.
