Sanatsujatiya 2.31

2.31 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

There is no one who [fully] knows the Vedas; or someone may understand the Vedas, O king. One who knows the Vedas does not [thereby] know the knowable; but one who stands in truth knows the knowable.

Meaning today and context

Truth is reached by living truthfully, not only by studying. A person who is honest through and through understands more than a scholar who is not.

Sanatsujata says no one truly knows the Vedas, though some understand their words; the one who knows the Vedas does not thereby know what is to be known, but one established in truth does.
