2.35 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

maunāddhi sa munirbhavati nāraṇyavasanānmuniḥ | akṣaraṃ tattu yo veda sa muniḥ śreṣṭha ucyate ||

One becomes a muni through silence, not by living in the forest. But one who knows that Imperishable is called the best of munis.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual life is not about where you live or how you look. Inner quiet, and knowing what does not perish, make a sage, at home or anywhere.

Sanatsujata explains what makes a muni (sage): silence (mauna), not living in the forest; the one who knows the Imperishable is the best of sages.
