Sanatsujatiya 4.13

4.13 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

apānaṃ girati prāṇaḥ prāṇaṃ girati candramāḥ | ādityo girate candramādityaṃ girate paraḥ | yoginastaṃ prapaśyanti bhagavantaṃ sanātanam ||

Prāṇa swallows apāna; the moon swallows prāṇa; the sun swallows the moon; and the Supreme swallows the sun. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Meaning today and context

Each thing is absorbed into something greater, until everything rests in the one beyond all. It is a picture of every lesser power finally resting in the highest.

Sanatsujata describes a chain of absorption: the in-breath swallows the out-breath, the moon swallows breath, the sun the moon, and the Supreme the sun.
