Sanatsujatiya 4.14

4.14 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

ekaṃ pādaṃ notkṣipati salilāddhaṃsa uccaran | taṃ cetsatatamṛtvijaṃ na mṛtyurnāmṛtaṃ bhavet | yoginastaṃ prapaśyanti bhagavantaṃ sanātanam ||

The swan, rising from the water, does not lift out one foot. If it were to lift that ever-officiating [foot], there would be neither death nor immortality. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Meaning today and context

The Lord keeps one foot in the world, and that is what keeps the world going. Beyond that, the very opposites of death and immortality fall away.

Sanatsujata uses the image of a swan (haṃsa, the Self) rising from water that never lifts one foot out; if that ever-sacrificing foot were lifted, there would be neither death nor immortality.
